Today the LA Marathon commenced in Dodger Stadium and ended in Santa Monica, Ca. The morning greeted the participants with a light drizzle but the clouds soon gave way to blue sky and sun. The temperature remained quite brisk, however this did not matter. The collective enthusiasm was infectious and the runners flooded Hollywood Blvd with the sounds of feet pounding the pavement and cheering one another forward.
The winners of these races are always stellar athletes who make a career and living from running. We expect them to win or, at the very least, lead the pack. What impresses me most about the LA Marathon is the volume of collective will power coalesced into one event. There are thousands of ordinary people who make the decision to train for months and finally, on one cold, wet day in March, complete over 26 miles on foot.
The air was filled with positivity and a resounding tone of, "YES I CAN!"
Remember, we do not need to run marathons or participate in displays of extreme athleticism to feel this sense of accomplishment. We need only set goals for ourselves: daily, weekly, and yearly. Stick to those goals and let their achievement fulfill your life. "Yes I can" will soon become "yes I did" and you will soon find yourself needing to add to your list.
The LA Marathon serves as a fantastic reminder that whatever self imposed limitations we place on ourselves are exactly that: self imposed. We can do anything if we just step out of our own way and hit the pavement.
Congratulations on a great day runners!
